Columbus Day Changes Over Time

October 13, 2009

People across the United States observed Columbus Day on October 12 with joy and skepticism. The media and citizens weigh in with their perspectives. Students will think about their perceptions of Columbus and Columbus Day. They will read the book Morning Girl to see that Native Americans were “normal” people, then read Zinn’s first chapter to see the “truth” about Columbus. This is not meant to shock the kids (although it does), but rather to open their eyes to the fact that there are two sides to every story.
